On Thursday, October 23 at 1pm, Georgetown University’s Clyde Wilcox, an esteemed political analyst and political science scholar, will join us for a brown bag lecture at the Kennedy Institute in room 319, to talk about the upcoming US mid-term elections.

Thursday, July 3rd at 6.00 pm in room 340 of the John F. Kennedy Institute.
The film focuses on Audre Lorde’s relation to the German Black Diaspora, her literary as well as political influence, and is a unique visual document about the times the author spent in Germany. The film observes the development of the Afro-German movement in the 1980s and the origins of the anti-racist movement before and after the German reunification. It relates the beginnings of these political debates and in doing so facilitates a historical analysis and an understanding of present debates on identity and racism in Germany.

Robert Dimand on „Mabel Timlin and the Transformation of Canadian Economics.“
In cooperation with the Embassy of Canada to Germany, the John F. Kennedy Institute presents a lecture by Prof. Robert Dimand of Brock University (Ontario) on „Mabel Timlin and the Transformation of Canadian Economics.“ Prof. Dimand is a visiting Professor of the Graduate School of North American Studies.
Mabel Timlin (1891-1976), author of Keynesian Economics (1942), had an extraordinary career that was central to the transformation of Canadian economics from an institutional, historical and localized focus to engagement with economic theory. Even though she did not become an assistant professor until her fiftieth year, Mabel Timlin advanced from department secretary to full professor at the University of Saskatchewan, the first woman outside the natural sciences elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the first woman to be president of the Canadian Political Science Association (which then included economics), one of the first ten women and one of the first Canadians on the executive committee of the American Economic Association, an active participant in the International Economic Association, and an outspoken critic of the Bank of Canada’s monetary policy.
Die Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften am JFK-I – Das Jahr 1914 in den USA
Unter dem Motto: Come to America! Wir laden ein, in die Welt und Kultur der USA von 1914 einzutauchen hat das Institut am 28.06.2014 an der Langen Nacht teilgenommen, diesmal organisiert von der Abteilung Geschichte, der Abteilung Wirtschaft und der Bibliothek.
Das Jahr 1914 war „ein ganz normales Jahr“ in den USA: modern und rückwärtsgewandt zugleich, und der Krieg in Europa war noch weit weg. Charlie Chaplin stolperte 1914 zum ersten Mal über die Kinoleinwände und D.W. Griffith produzierte den rassistischen Streifen „Birth of a Nation“. Hölzerne Tinkertoy-Modelbausätze erschienen in US-amerikanischen Spielzeugläden und Lewis Hine photographierte Kinderarbeit. Scott Joplin komponierte seinen Song „Magnetic Rag“ und viele US-Amerikanerinnen monierten, dass sie das Wahlrecht noch immer nicht hatten. Babe Ruth begann seine Baseballkarriere bei den Boston Red Sox und in den Schulen war die Prügelstrafe erlaubt.
Das JFKI zeigte Filme, die 1914 gedreht bzw. gezeigt wurden, darunter Charlie Chaplin’s „Kid’s Auto Race“ und „Mable’s Strange Predicament“ und D.W. Griffth’s „Birth of a Nation“ mit anschließender Diskussion; dazu Bilder, Titelseiten, Poster aus der Zeit. Ebenso wurden zeitgenössische „Töne“ vorgestellt, darunter Musik aus der Zeit wie z.B. Ragtime und eine Rede von US-Präsident Woodrow Wilson.
Wie haben Kinder 1914 gelernt und gespielt? Hierzu gab es Spiele und Bastelanleitungen, Ausmalbilder und Buntstifte, Süßigkeiten zum Probieren und zwei richtige Schulstunden – unterrichtet von Florian Gabriel — aus dem Jahre 1914.
In Vorträgen erzählten Irwin Collier von der Gründung der Federal Reserve Bank 1914 und Jessica Gienow-Hecht berichtete vom Schicksal der Deutschamerikaner zu Beginn des Krieges.
Unter Anleitung einer Kostümdesignerin erschienen viele Institutsmitglieder und einige Gäste gemäß der Zeit verkleidet, wie das Foto belegt.
Mit 187 gezählten Besucherinnen und Besuchern war die Lange Nacht ein voller Erfolg, es gab viele Begegnungen und Gespräche. Unzählige Popcorntüten wurden verteilt und Hershey Bars verspeist. Hot Dogs und Muffins der Cafete fanden guten Absatz und Besucher sowie Institutsmitglieder hatten eine Menge Spaß.
Herzlichen Dank an all jene Institutsmitglieder in den Abteilungen für Wirtschaftswissenschaften und Geschichte, der Bibliothek, der Cafete und an Tim Kremser von der JFKI Alumni Association, die in der Vorbereitung für und an diesem Arbeit ihre Ideen, Zeit und Energie zur Verfügung gestellt haben. Dank auch an die die JFKI Alumni Association für die zusätzliche Förderung unseres Projekts.

Lecture and exhibition opening: Audre Lorde – The Berlin Years
June 19, 2014, 6 pm, room 340, John F. Kennedy Institute for North
American Studies
A joint event of the Women’s Representative and the Library of the John
F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies
Audre Lorde, afro-american author, feminist and civil rights activist,
taught in 1984 as a guest professor at the John F. Kennedy Institute for
North American Studies.
As celebrated icon of the second feminist movement Lorde inspired
several generations with her engaging poetry. In 1991 she received the
Walt Whitman Citation of Merit which declared her from 1991 to 1993 New
York State Poet Laureate. From 1984 to 1992 Lorde spent each year
several months in Berlin and read from her work in Germany, Switzerland,
the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. During this time she affected
black and white feminists in Germany and beyond especially by linking
the themes of racism and feminism.
Afro-german women participated in the courses which Audre Lorde offered
at the John F. Kennedy Institute, and Lorde motivated them to write and
to publish. Thus she influenced in a major way the beginnings of an
afro-german movement.
Dagmar Schultz, publisher of Lorde’s work in Orlanda Verlag, documented
Lorde’s impact in the film „Audre Lorde – the Berlin Years 1984 to
1992“. The film is based on a large variety of photos, audio- and video
recordings, letters and posters which Dagmar Schultz had made and
collected as companion of Lorde. She gave this historical raw material
as well as the papers of Orlanda Verlag as an archive on Audre Lorde to
the University Archive of Freie Universität.
Lectures by Marion Kraft and Dagmar Schultz(in German language) remind
of the connection of Audre Lorde with the John-F.-Kennedy-Institut and
her influence of the afro-german movement.
Subsequently the photo exhibition „Audre Lorde – the Berlin Years“ will
be opened in the library, where a reception will take place.
