Zum Auftakt des Projektes reiste Katja f\u00fcr drei Wochen nach Spanien, um die lokalen Arnika-Spezialisten zu treffen und mehr \u00fcber Zustand und Bedrohung der spanischen Vorkommen zu erfahren. Vielen Dank an all die freundlichen KollegInnen, den Deutschen Akademischen Austausch-Dienst (DAAD) und die Frauenf\u00f6rderung der FU Berlin, die diese Reise erm\u00f6glicht haben!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To Kick-off the project, Katja went to Spain for three weeks, to visit the local Arnica specialists and learn more about the condition and threats for the Spanish populations. Warm thanks to all the friendly colleagues, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the women’s equality funds at FU Berlin for making this trip possible!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gefunden! Katjas gelber Hut mit dem nun nicht mehr gelben Bl\u00fcten-Kopf einer Arnika, die zur Fruchtausstreu bereit ist. Die Bl\u00fctezeit dauert von Juni bis Juli, allerdings mit gr\u00f6\u00dferer \u00f6rtlicher \/ regionaler Variation. \/\/ Found you! Katja\u2019s yellow hat with the no-longer-yellow flowerhead of an Arnica, now ready to release its fruit. M\u00c4H MICH! Als halbnat\u00fcrliche Lebensr\u00e4ume brauchen Heuwiesen menschliche Eingriffe: Werden sie nach Fruchtreife der meisten Pflanzen nicht gem\u00e4ht, wachsen sie so zu, dass Arnika & co nicht mehr genug Licht auf ihre Rosettenbl\u00e4tter bekommen \u2013 B\u00e4ume pflanzen (siehe Hintergrund) ist noch schlimmer! \/\/ MOW ME! As semi-natural habitats, hay meadows depend on human intervention: If not cut after most plants have set fruit, they grow so dense that Arnica & co. do not get enough light on their rosette leaves anymore \u2013 worse still if trees (see background) are planted! <\/em>\\\\ Photo: K. Vom Fressfeind gerettet? Leichte Beweidung kann das Arnika-Wachstum in Heideland f\u00f6rdern, so wie hier in Galizien. Das ver\u00e4nderte Aussehen der Pflanzen k\u00f6nnte eine Reaktion auf die lokalen Wuchsbedingungen sein. \/\/ Saved by the (cow) bell? Low intensity grazing may favour Arnica growth in heathlands, such as here in the coastal mountains of northern Galicia. Warm, w\u00e4rmer, hei\u00df \u2013 bei dr\u00fcckenden Temperaturen von bis zu 40 \u00b0C im Schatten waren Sonnenblumen die n\u00e4chsten Verwandten von Arnika, die Katja im K\u00f6niglichen Botanischen Garten von Madrid finden konnte. \/\/ As hot as it gets \u2013 in stifling temperatures of up to 40 \u00b0C in the shade, sunflowers were the closest relatives of Arnica which Katja could find in the Madrid Royal Botanic Garden. <\/em>\\\\ Photo: K. Arnika w\u00e4chst sowohl \u00fcber als auch unterhalb der Baumgrenze, in der subalpinen und montanen H\u00f6henstufe \u2013 wieder in (halb-)nat\u00fcrlichen Gras- und Heidefl\u00e4chen. Die k\u00fcrzere Vegetationsperiode verhindert hier typischerweise das \u201eVerfilzen\u201c wie bei Heuwiesen im Tiefland.\u00a0 \/\/ Arnica grows both above and below the treeline, at the subalpine and montane levels \u2013 again in (semi-)natural grass- and heathlands.
