This is a hyphen: -
\nWe use it in compounds like faint-hearted<\/em> or pre-recorded<\/em>. In German it is called Bindestrich<\/em> or Viertelgeviertstrich<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This is an n-dash: –
\nIt’s so called because it has the length of the letter n. In German<\/strong> they call it Halbgeviertstrich<\/em> or simply Gedankenstrich<\/em>, and it is used together with spaces to mark breaks in sentences. Wikipedia says (under “Halbgeviertstrich”): <\/p>\n

In Appositionen, bei Parenthesen und erkl\u00e4renden Einsch\u00fcben – etwa in diesem Beispiel – kann der Gedankenstrich das Komma oder die Klammer als Satzzeichen ersetzen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
