This experience was not only enriching in terms of medical knowledge but also provided insights into the South African healthcare system and the diverse medical challenges it faces.

In the Gastroenterology department, I was introduced to the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. From endoscopy to interpreting lab results, I learned extensively about holistic patient care. Similarly, in Cardiology, I encountered a challenging environment where I familiarized myself with heart diseases and interventions such as catheter ablations. The support of experienced physicians and the dedication of the nursing staff significantly contributed to my professional development.

Leisure Activities and Social Life

Apart from the hospital setting, Cape Town offered an incredible lifestyle. The opportunity to unwind on beaches after work and marvel at the spectacular view from Table Mountain made the work-life balance fulfilling. Engaging in activities like kitesurfing on picturesque beaches and exploring breathtaking hiking trails provided a welcome break from the medical routine.

The unique Internship Programme community, comprising German and international peers, deserves special mention. The exchange of experiences and cultural differences not only enriched my social life but also deepened my understanding of global health issues. The shared experiences and mutual support system fostered a sense of belonging and friendship that made my internship in Cape Town unforgettable.

Safety Measures and Transportation

Regarding safety, it was advisable to hike only in groups and always use Uber for evening travels, which was affordable and reliable. These precautions ensured a sense of security in Cape Town, allowing me to enjoy leisure activities without worry. Additionally, I recommend renting or sharing a car as there is limited public transportation apart from Uber. During my stay, I resided in Observatory, enabling me to walk to the clinic, and I noticed that many other interns also lived in this area, fostering community and social exchange.

Living and Housing

In Observatory, a neighborhood within walking distance to the hospital, I found accommodation that suited my needs. It’s a fairly safe area, and I was living in a student house with three other students, all from Germany. I found the landlord through a Facebook PJ group, which is a common way for students to find housing arrangements in Cape Town. Many students live in Observatory, and another popular accommodation option is the Freehand Lodge.

Financial Considerations

Another aspect to consider is the cost of living in Cape Town, which is significantly lower compared to Europe. However, the tuition fees are quite high. It is important to factor this into the planning of the stay in Cape Town.

Overall, my internship at Groote Schuur Hospital was an unforgettable experience that not only expanded my medical skills but also facilitated personal growth. Cape Town proved to be the perfect backdrop for a balanced life of work, adventure, and community

Tipps für andere Praktikant:innen

Vorbereitung

Bewerbung öffnen immer 1 Jahr im Voraus (Oktober)

Beantragung Visum

Introduction to Medical Specialties As a medical student in the Internship Programme at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, I had the opportunity to work in the Gastroenterology and Cardiology departments.
