Verfasst wurde es von dem Engl\u00e4nder Samuel Couling (1859-1922), der 25 Jahre als Missionar in Shandong lebte und in Shanghai die Zeitschrift \u201eNew China Review\u201c herausgab.<br \/>\nDas Werk gilt noch heute als geeignete Quelle, wie das Land zu Beginn des 20.
