Im Jahr seines Wahlsieges lieh sich George Washington in der <em>New York Society Library<\/em> die Titel \u201eLaw of Nations\u201c und Band 12 der \u201eCommons Debates\u201c aus, der Abschriften des britischen House of Commons enthielt. Nach vier Wochen h\u00e4tte er die beiden Titel am 2.\u00a0November\u00a01789 eigentlich zur\u00fcckgeben m\u00fcssen.<\/p>\n<p>Was Washington dazwischen kam, wei\u00df niemand (wohlm\u00f6glich die <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Franz%C3%B6sische_Revolution\">folgenreichen Ereignisse<\/a> in Frankreich?). Inflationsbereinigt kamen aber bis heute Mahngeb\u00fchren von 300.000 US-Dollar (ca. 222.500 Euro) zusammen. Die Bibliothek, die <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysoclib.org\/\">noch heute existiert<\/a>, hat durch ein 1934 entdecktes Ausleihregister von der Vergesslichkeit des Pr\u00e4sidenten erfahren, in dem er schlicht als \u201ePresident\u201c gef\u00fchrt wurde.
