He identifies the main challenges students face, for example feeling stuck due to time management issues and fear of judgement. Anselm believes writing a dissertation is both an academic task and a personal challenge. He urges students to talk about their writing difficulties with others to find solutions. In his workshops, he fosters a supportive atmosphere where students can assist each other, and helps them overcome challenges like writer’s block.

He has introduced a „writing week“ for students to focus solely on their writing, and overall recommends joining writing groups or setting specific personal writing times for better commitment. Anselm also suggests creative writing exercises to make academic writing enjoyable and points out that drafting ideas before writing can relieve stress and enhance creativity. He also discusses digital tools: He advises selecting tools that meet individual needs and compares the benefits of handwriting and digital writing. He warns that not all tools are beneficial for every student or every type of text, emphasizing careful consideration in their use.

Participants often leave his workshops with specific techniques or tools they’ve found helpful, expressing renewed motivation. Anselm encourages sharing one’s writing with others early in the writing process and using their feedback to improve it, rather than waiting until the deadline.

[see the full transcript of the episode here]
