Diversity Requires Commitment

Diversity is not an end in itself — it demands commitment. Carolin Loysa is the Diversity and Anti-Discrimination Officer at Freie Universität Berlin. Her work bridges academic inquiry and lived experience. For her, diversity means questioning structures — and creating space for new ways of thinking and being.

As the Commissioner for Diversity and Anti-Discrimination at Freie Universität Berlin, I am committed to upholding the university’s mandate to address discrimination with awareness of power dynamics and from an intersectional perspective – in accordance with the principles laid out in the university’s Anti-Discrimination Statute and Diversity Approach. In and with the Diversity and Anti-Discrimination Committee, we advise the university’s executive board with the aim of strengthening and further developing institutional structures that promote and secure diversity. The committee is deliberately composed to reflect a broad range of discrimination dimensions and lived experiences — as an institutional practice that does not individualize structural inequality, but addresses it through collective engagement.

Social Exclusion Is Deeply Inscribed in the Body, Everyday Life, and Language

These topics — and the work of engaging with them at the intersection of structural commitment and lived experience — are not only central to my professional role, but deeply tied to my biography. As a queer person, woman, and a child of both East Germany and Lebanon, I’ve experienced forms of social exclusion that settle into the body, shape everyday experience, and mark the ways we speak and are spoken to. These experiences are often difficult to articulate — which makes it all the more important to create space for them and to take their structural dimensions seriously. As an anthropologist — and through my own lived experience — I’ve long been engaged with questions of social belonging, cultural practice, and the ways power shapes thought and action.

My long-standing involvement in gender equality work at the Institute for Latin American Studies has helped me to think more concretely about how anti-discrimination and gender equity are interconnected — because discrimination and inequality rarely operate along a single axis.

My work explores lived experiences of exclusion, affect, and belonging. At the crossroads of urban and political anthropology, migration studies, and affect theory, I am interested in how the knowledges and experiences of the global majority – people outside Europe and the United States, particularly from Latin America and West Asia – come into dialogue and generate new ways of thinking. Queer-feminist and decolonial frameworks guide my approach, both methodologically and theoretically.

It Is About Taking Your Own Experiences Seriously as Sources of Knowledge

This perspective also shapes my teaching. I see the classroom as a space where knowledge is not simply transmitted, but co-created — grounded in attentiveness, curiosity, and critical reflection. Influenced by thinkers such as Sara Ahmed, Maria Lugones, Audre Lorde, and bell hooks, I view pedagogy as a shared responsibility. It’s also about challenging institutional norms — and encouraging everyone at the university, not just students, to take their own experiences seriously as sources of knowledge.

At a time when academic inquiry and institutions are under growing pressure to justify themselves, it is essential to reaffirm their critical and emancipatory potential. Academic freedom includes the right — and the responsibility — to ask uncomfortable questions, especially when they confront established hierarchies. Appeals to neutrality can easily become a façade: a seemingly balanced position that masks structural injustice and deflects responsibility. Not taking a position is never truly neutral.

Promoting Diversity Also Means Disrupting Existing Systems of Order

That’s why diversity, equity, and justice must not be treated as optional additions, but as structural commitments — especially now. As institutional and societal resources are being redistributed and cut, deliberate decisions must be made in favor of protection, participation, and visibility. Promoting diversity is not only about inclusion — it also means questioning dominant logics and taking care work seriously as a shared, institutional task.

I consider my own social positioning an important resource for envisioning and advancing diversity and equity and understand queerness — as a framework for diversity — not only as a social identity, but as an epistemological lens. It allows us to unsettle normative structures, question the taken-for-granted, and imagine new ways of thinking and acting. That takes courage: the courage to face friction, sit with ambiguity, and embrace change.

Dr. Carolin Loysa, Diversity and Anti-Discrimination Officer, Research Associate and Gender Equality Officer at the Institute for Latin American Studies, Freie Universität Berlin
