The Berlin Forum on Global Politics<\/em> has just released a collaborative, inter-disciplinary collection of essays on the ongoing free-trade agreement negotiations between the United States and the European Union:<\/p>\n

„The free trade agreement (TAFTA | TTIP) currently being negotiated between the\u00a0United States<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0European Union<\/em>\u00a0has the potential to\u00a0significantly impact the lives of people on both sides of the Atlantic\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0across the world<\/em>. Because it is crucial to broaden the debate on this topic of global importance, the Berlin Forum on Global Politics, in collaboration with the Internet & Society Collaboratory and FutureChallenges.org of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, decided to send out an\u00a0international call for papers<\/em>\u00a0in order to collect a\u00a0strong plurality of views<\/em>\u00a0on TAFTA | TTIP.<\/p>\n

The result is an\u00a0open knowledge<\/em>\u00a0publication, freely accessible under its Creative Commons license, which includes\u00a022 articles<\/em>\u00a0written by a\u00a0multitude of well-informed global stakeholders<\/em>, members of civil society, academia, think tanks, consumer and activist groups, and business organizations.“<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

„This essay discusses American mainstream news coverage of the TAFTA |\u00a0<\/span>TTIP negotiation process between the U.S. and the E.U. in three consecutive\u00a0steps: First, it tests the hypotheses that coverage will be very limited, both\u00a0in overall references to the topic, as well as the content of news\u00a0reports. An empirical analysis of news content generated by leading U.S.\u00a0news organizations subsequently reveals that both of these hypotheses can\u00a0be tentatively verified. Secondly, various media biases are presented as\u00a0possible explanations for this lack in news coverage. Thirdly, the essay offers\u00a0suggestions for how to increase news media interest and public awareness of\u00a0the TAFTA | TTIP negotiation process.“<\/span><\/p>\n
