In my research, I study English grammar, metaphor and framing, and political (or politicized) language. In my free time, I like to take long walks through Berlin&#8217;s varied neighborhoods, eat at the many great restaurants in this city or sit on my balcony and tweet about current events from a linguistic perspective. I do not teach in the intruductory module this year, but you will get to know me when you take your &#8220;Levels of Linguistic Analysis&#8221; module.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-65\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/linguistics\/files\/2020\/09\/selfie-kirsten1-150x150.png\" alt=\"Kirsten Middeke\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/linguistics\/files\/2020\/09\/selfie-kirsten1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/linguistics\/files\/2020\/09\/selfie-kirsten1.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 85vw, 150px\" \/><strong><a href=\"mailto:kirsten.middeke@fu-berlin.de\">Dr. Kirsten Middeke<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I studied English linguistics at the Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin, linguistics, literature and Celtic civilization at University College Dublin, German as a Foreign Language at the Humboldt University Berlin and literary translation at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit\u00e4t M\u00fcnchen. I worked as a language teacher and translator before getting my PhD in English Linguistics with a dissertation on Old English argument structure constructions at the Freie Universit\u00e4t. This summer, I started working on my PhD in sociolinguistics. I come from a multilingual family (I speak Cantonese, Mandarin, English, German and a little bit Spanish) and enjoy learning how different languages work and getting to know people from different cultures. My research revolves around lexical categorization, cognition and statistical methods. Before, I studied English Linguistics and Communication Science in Jena. I\u2019m currently working on my PhD thesis on the phonology of German in Namibia where I get to focus on the topics I enjoy most: phonetics\/phonology, variation &amp; change and sociolinguistics.
