Put simply, this approach is based on three assumptions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Sentences (or at least declarative sentences) have <strong>truth conditions<\/strong> \u2013 a set of things that must be true about the real world in order for the content of the sentence (also called the <em>proposition<\/em>) to be true.<\/li>\n<li>The meaning of a (declarative) sentence can be <strong>captured entirely<\/strong> in terms of its truth conditions (if we can describe the truth conditions of a sentence, we have described its meaning).<\/li>\n<li>Any part of the communicative function of a sentence that cannot be captured in terms of truth conditions is not part of its meaning in the strict sense, sometimes called \u201csentence meaning\u201d (it may be part of what is sometimes called \u201c<strong>speaker meaning<\/strong>\u201d), something we will come back to in a few weeks.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Let us look at the following example:<\/p>\n<p>(1) <em>Donald Trump incited a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The following is an attempt to list the things that must be true about the world in order for this sentence to be true:<\/p>\n<p>a. There is a person named Donald Trump (DT)<br \/>\nb. There is a group of people (G)<br \/>\nc. There is a place named the US capitol (C)<br \/>\nd. G is willing to use violence<br \/>\ne. G should not be in C<br \/>\nf. DT did (said) something to G<br \/>\ng. Because of (f), G entered C by force<br \/>\nh. DT knew (d)<br \/>\ni. DT wanted (g) to happen<\/p>\n<p>The idea is that the conditions in (a-i) describe the meaning of (1). Note that is a completely different question from the question whether (1) is, in fact, true.<\/p>\n<p>Now consider the sentence in (2):<\/p>\n<p>(2) <em>A violent mob was incited by Donald Trump to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Note that it has the same truth conditions as (1) \u2013 whenever (1) is true (2) is true, and whenever (1) is false, (2) is false. In other words: (1) and (2) have the same meaning! This does not mean that they are completely identical in terms of their communicative function. For example, (1) puts the focus on the person referred to as <em>Donald Trump<\/em>, while (2) puts the focus on the group described as <em>violent mob<\/em>. But this is part of speaker meaning (putting the focus on one or the other does not change the meaning of the sentences themselves).<\/p>\n<h1>Uses of truth-conditional semantics<\/h1>\n<p>Most modern semantic theories do not assume this is a good way of describing the meaning of sentences, but truth-conditions are nevertheless an extremely useful tool for understanding relationships between propositions. Let us look at some of these relations.<\/p>\n<h2>Paraphrase<\/h2>\n<h3>Grammatical paraphrase<\/h3>\n<p>We already saw that truth conditions can be used to show that two different grammatical structures have the same meaning: (1) and (2) differ only in that one is an active sentence and the other a passive sentence \u2013 since they have the same meaning, we can conclude that active and passive sentences are always paraphrases of each other \u2013 that these two grammatical structures have the same meaning.<\/p>\n<p>This can be more formally expressed by using a so-called \u201ctruth table\u201d. We call the proposition of the first sentence \u201cp\u201d and that of the second sentence \u201cq\u201d, and then we determine how the truth (or falsity) of <strong>p<\/strong>affects the truth of <strong>q<\/strong>and vice versa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>p<\/strong>: <em>Donald Trump <strong>incited<\/strong> a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>q<\/strong>: <em>A violent mob <strong>was incited<\/strong> by Donald Trump to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Truth tables:<\/p>\n<table width=\"80pt\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>p<\/th>\n<th>q<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>T<\/td>\n<td>T<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>F<\/td>\n<td>F<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<table width=\"80pt\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>q<\/th>\n<th>p<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>T<\/td>\n<td>T<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>F<\/td>\n<td>F<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>(These tables are read as follows: \u201cIf [proposition in first column] is [true\/false], then [proposition in second column] is [true\/false]\u201d; for example, the first row of the first table means \u201cIf <strong>p\u00a0<\/strong>is true, <strong>q\u00a0<\/strong>is true\u201d).<\/p>\n<h3>Paraphrase (lexical)<\/h3>\n<p>We would get the same truth tables for the propositions of the following pair of sentences:<\/p>\n<p><strong>p<\/strong>: <em>Donald Trump <strong>incited<\/strong> a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>q<\/strong>: <em>Donald Trump <strong>egged on<\/strong> a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>These are also paraphrases of each other, in this case, because <em>incite<\/em> and <em>egg on<\/em> mean the same thing (except that one is formal an one is colloquial, but that is a difference in speaker meaning).<\/p>\n<h3>Paraphrase (referential)<\/h3>\n<p>And we would get the same truth tables for the propositions of the following pair of sentences:<\/p>\n<p><strong>p<\/strong>: <em><strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> incited a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>q<\/strong>: <em><strong>The president of the<\/strong> <strong>USA<\/strong> incited a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In this case, the reason is not that <em>Donald Trump<\/em> and <em>The president of the USA<\/em> mean the same thing (names don&#8217;t have meaning at all), but that (at the time of writing) they refer to the same person.<\/p>\n<h2>Contradiction (Negation)<\/h2>\n<p>The opposite of paraphrase is contradiction \u2013 this is a situation where if <strong>p\u00a0<\/strong>is true, <strong>q<\/strong>must be false and vice versa \u2013(only one of <strong>p\u00a0<\/strong>or <strong>q\u00a0<\/strong>can be true). The clearest case of contradiction is provided by pairs of sentences that are identical except for the fact that one of them is negated:<\/p>\n<p><strong>p<\/strong>: <em>Donald Trump incited a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>q<\/strong>: <em>Donald Trump did not incite a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Truth tables:<\/p>\n<table width=\"80pt\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>p<\/th>\n<th>q<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>T<\/td>\n<td>F<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>F<\/td>\n<td>T<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<table width=\"80pt\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>q<\/th>\n<th>p<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>T<\/td>\n<td>F<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>F<\/td>\n<td>T<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>Entailment<\/h2>\n<p>A very interesting relationship between two propositions is that of <strong>entailment<\/strong> \u2013 a situation where one proposition logically follows from another. Consider the following examples:<\/p>\n<p><strong>p<\/strong>: <em>Donald Trump <strong>persuaded<\/strong> a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>q<\/strong>: <em>A violent mob planned to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here, if <strong>p<\/strong>is true, then <strong>q<\/strong>must be true \u2013 to <em>persuade<\/em> someone to do something means that they plan to do it (and will do it unless someone stops them or they change their mind later). However, the two sentences are not paraphrases, because if <strong>q\u00a0<\/strong>is true, <strong>p\u00a0<\/strong>could be true or false \u2013 if it is true that a violent mob planned to storm the US Capitol, the reason <em>could<\/em> be that Donald Trump persuaded them, but it does not have to be. In other words, the relationship only goes on one direction (<strong>q<\/strong> follows from <strong>p<\/strong>, not the other way around).<\/p>\n<p>Truth tables:<\/p>\n<table width=\"80pt\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>p<\/th>\n<th>q<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>T<\/td>\n<td>T<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>F<\/td>\n<td>T\/F<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<table width=\"80pt\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>q<\/th>\n<th>p<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>T<\/td>\n<td>T\/F<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>F<\/td>\n<td>F<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>This is interesting, because the entailment is triggered by the meaning of the verb <em>persuade<\/em> \u2013 if we choose a verb like <em>urge<\/em>, which at first looks similar and might be given as a synonym in a thesaurus, the entailment disappears. Consinder:<\/p>\n<p><strong>p<\/strong>: <em>Donald Trump <strong>urged<\/strong> a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>q<\/strong>: <em>A violent mob planned to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Truth tables:<\/p>\n<table width=\"80pt\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>p<\/th>\n<th>q<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>T<\/td>\n<td>T\/F<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>F<\/td>\n<td>T\/F<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<table width=\"80pt\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>q<\/th>\n<th>p<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>T<\/td>\n<td>T\/F<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>F<\/td>\n<td>T\/F<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>Negative entailment<\/h2>\n<p>Another relation between propositions is that of <strong>negative entailment<\/strong>: here, if <strong>p\u00a0<\/strong>is true, <strong>q\u00a0<\/strong>must be false but if <strong>p\u00a0<\/strong>is false, <strong>q\u00a0<\/strong>can be true or false. Consider:<\/p>\n<p><strong>p<\/strong>: <em>Donald Trump <strong>persuaded<\/strong> a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>q<\/strong>: <em>The mob planned to stay away from the US Capitol.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If Donald Trump persuaded the violent mob to storm the Capitol, it cannot be true that the mob planned to stay away from the Capitol (this would mean that they were <em>not<\/em> persuaded). Here, <strong>q<\/strong>must be true regardless of whether <strong>p\u00a0<\/strong>is true or not. Consider:<\/p>\n<p><strong>p<\/strong>: <em>The president of the USA incited a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>q<\/strong>: <em>There is a president of the USA<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If the president of the USA incited a violent mob to storm the US Capitol, then there must be a president of the USA \u2013 otherwise he could not have done what is claimed. However, if the president of the USA did <em>not<\/em> incite a violent mob to storm the US Capitol, then there must also be a president of the USA \u2013\u00a0otherwise it does not make sense to talk about things he did not do. Some of the most frequent ones are the following:<\/p>\n<h4>1. Definite descriptions<\/h4>\n<p><strong>p<\/strong>: <em><strong>The president of the USA<\/strong> incited a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>q<\/strong>: <em>There is a president of the USA.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>2. Factive verbs<\/h4>\n<p><strong>p<\/strong>: <em>Donald Trump <strong>regrets<\/strong> inciting a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>q<\/strong>: <em>Donald Trump incited a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>3. Implicative verbs<\/h4>\n<p><strong>p<\/strong>: <em>Donald Trump <strong>managed<\/strong> to incite a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>q<\/strong>: <em>Donald Trump tried to incite a violent mob to storm the US Capitol.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>4.
