{"id":645,"date":"2015-11-04T21:44:20","date_gmt":"2015-11-04T19:44:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/?page_id=645"},"modified":"2016-05-06T23:11:50","modified_gmt":"2016-05-06T21:11:50","slug":"cine-indigena","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/student-presentations\/cine-indigena\/","title":{"rendered":"Cine Ind\u00edgena"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"CENTER\"><span style=\"color: #800000\">Slavena Mincheva<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><i>Video Ind\u00edgena\u201d or \u201cCine Ind\u00edgena\u201d<\/i> started as a project of people which are<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-628 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/cine-indigena-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"cine-indigena\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/cine-indigena-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/cine-indigena.jpg 470w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> developing films and videos dealing with migration between Mexico and the United States.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Since 2006 there have been a growing number of films screened at the <i>International Festival of Indigenous Peoples Film and Video. <\/i>The project expanded and linked with filmmakers across the continent. Nowadays <i>C\u00edne Indigena<\/i> constitutes a transnational network of places of production and consumption.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><b>Changing Perspectives<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">These films are presenting a completely new perspective of the way of life of indigenous people in Latin America. They are also in contrast with the film representations of television and mainstream cinema.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-631 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/familias-taller-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"familias-taller\" width=\"397\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/familias-taller-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/familias-taller-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 397px) 100vw, 397px\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">The actors of these documentaries are involved in two localities themselves, often living a translocal life. As the filmmakers&#8217; biographies are evidence of the migratory movement, they are creating authentic film scenes, reflecting real life. They<i> <\/i>often portray everyday life in the rural indigenous communities, its agriculture, its commerce, the preparation of local dishes, community work, fiestas, political organisation and religion.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-630 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/dsc_06511-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"dsc_06511\" width=\"369\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/dsc_06511-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/dsc_06511-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/dsc_06511.jpg 1758w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 369px) 100vw, 369px\" \/> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Diverse actors, among them non-indigenous collaborators and members of the anti-globalisation movement, participate in the filmmaking. For this reason <i>Cine Ind\u00edgena <\/i>rather more constitutes a transnational network of places of production and consumption. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">A binational context could be caused by the relocation from countryside to large city, from one country to another, or simply with the participation in different everyday and institutional settings.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><b>Confronting Discrimination<\/b><br \/>\nLiving among other countries they are confronting inequality and racial discrimination. They also had to face a homogesization, summerised as the group of \u201cethnic Mexicans\u201d- a group which is homogenised and discriminated against within the United States. They suffered to be lumped together under a category with other populations in the context of homogenising nation models.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">These homogenising nation models have been maintained and reproduced by the dominant sociaty. That means: by the community, and thereby, by the Media.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><b>The Power of Media<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">At this point it is absolutely urgent to mention the power of media, especially the power of film. As a medium, which requires our basic senses, the seeing and hearing, it controls our perception of things and contexts. There are many aspects of this power:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', 'Times New Roman', serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">the dynamic of camera work<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-633 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/y1k6qTD-300x184.png\" alt=\"y1k6qTD\" width=\"346\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">the movements of the objects being filmed<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', 'Times New Roman', serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">the sounds being recorded<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', 'Times New Roman', serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">the choice of the colors by filming<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', 'Times New Roman', serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">the scene cutting, which is being chosen and <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', 'Times New Roman', serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">the merge of the scenes<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', 'Times New Roman', serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">All these important facrors dictate the presentation of the Object and are fully under the control of the person, who is filming \u2013 the cameraman.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">All these tools give him the power to underline and represent already existent stereotypes and categories, as well as the power to create new perceptions and opinions.<br \/>\nThe cameraman ist the one, who decides what, who, where, when and how to film.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><b>Historical Summary<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">In the 90s indigenous persons of Mexico developed the urge to decolonize existing representations of the indigenous people as exotic, subordinate and passive \u201cothers\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">The self-identification as &#8216;indigenous people&#8217; offered them the advantage of greater visibility. They do not only express a shared identity to an indigenous language group, but also in many instances, a new feeling of belonging simultaneosly to a transnational community. For this reason, they chose to appropriate and redefine the indigenous identity in their own positive terms, employing it as a political weapon.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-640 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/indigenous-peoples-rights-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"indigenous-peoples-rights\" width=\"330\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/indigenous-peoples-rights-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/indigenous-peoples-rights.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">The indigenous community raised political demands on an ethnic basis and asked for collective cultural rights.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">It is no coincidence that during this same period of time, indigenous people began to create their own documentaries and narrative pictures as cameramen\/women, sound professionals, directors or producers. It was the start of strong indigenous movements. Local television stations and non-governmental organizations were founded.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">They used the power of videotaping and started their own production of documentary and narrative films. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><b>A new Beginning<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-632 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/festivales_berlin_2015_el_cine_indigena_latinoamericano_es_protagonista_2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"festivales_berlin_2015_el_cine_indigena_latinoamericano_es_protagonista_2\" width=\"409\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/festivales_berlin_2015_el_cine_indigena_latinoamericano_es_protagonista_2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/mediaanthro\/files\/2015\/11\/festivales_berlin_2015_el_cine_indigena_latinoamericano_es_protagonista_2.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 409px) 100vw, 409px\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Doing their own media offered them the opportunity to<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> suspend the<br \/>\npower relation between them and the previous directors, as deputies of the dominant community, and thereby, to suspend their dependence on mainstream media.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Practicing their own camera work they are able to show their own point of view,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">filming the situations they interpret as interesting and important.<br \/>\nThe media representation allowes them a greater accessibility and visibility for the world from their own perspective and understanding for themselves.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><b>Importance of <i>Cine In\u00edgena<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">The example of <i>Cine Ind\u00edgena <\/i>illustrates how creators, collaborators and viewers may construct new emotional attachments as a basis of collective feelings and belongings.
