Academics are united by the regional frame of their research, which is geared towards researchcollaboration across continental borders.<br>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/open-access.network\/fortbilden\/thematische-workshops\/online-workshop-am-2-november-2022\">half-day workshop<\/a>, jointly organised by the <a href=\"https:\/\/africanstudieslibrary.org\/\">African Studies Library<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/open-access.network\/startseite\">open-access.network<\/a>, on 2nd November 2022, scholars and infrastructure providers came together to exchange on open access publishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event offered participants the opportunity for exchange and networking. Some important take-aways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Obtaining information on publication strategies in an early phase of the research process is important;<\/li><li>It it vital to check publishing contracts before signing them;<\/li><li>Openness should be part of a researcher&#8217;s self-understanding: Choose a Creative Commons license, ideally CC BY;<\/li><li>For publications in the European Union: authors can refer to the copyright law of their country if it is part of the EU.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the participants shared information and links to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gida-global.org\/care\">CARE<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.go-fair.org\/fair-principles\/\">FAIR<\/a> principles as well as tools that allow for secure data sharing (eg. <a href=\"https:\/\/dmlawtool.ccdigitallaw.ch\/\">DMLawTool<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div data-wp-interactive=\"core\/file\" class=\"wp-block-file aligncenter\"><object data-wp-bind--hidden=\"!state.hasPdfPreview\" hidden class=\"wp-block-file__embed\" data=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/open-access-berlin\/files\/2022\/11\/Miro_publisher-repository.pdf\" type=\"application\/pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:390px\" aria-label=\"Einbettung von Einbettung von Miro_publisher-repository..\"><\/object><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-02db088f-b280-4e42-90fc-862fb3c0d354\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/open-access-berlin\/files\/2022\/11\/Miro_publisher-repository.pdf\">Miro_publisher-repository<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Different ways of publishing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the second part of the workshop, <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5194-8983\">Dr Tim Glawion<\/a> (Africa Spectrum), <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-1048-0429\">Dr Francois van Schalkwyk<\/a> (African Minds), <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7431-8498\">Dr Sebastian Nordhoff<\/a> (LangSciPress) and <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-6157-1494\">Dr Jo Havemann<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4085-0398\">Nicholas Outa<\/a> (AfricArXiv) presented the services of their publishing houses as well as the AfricArXiv repository. The publishers meet challenges such as establishing a reputation and financing by strengthening cooperation or crowdfunding. The latter is also necessary for publishing in the <a href=\"https:\/\/open-access.network\/en\/information\/glossary#c6223\">diamond open access model<\/a>. Regardless of whether it is a journal article or monograph, the quality is assured by a peer-review process. Furthermore all of the providers guarantee persistent access to the publication \/ research findings. In an \u201cask the expert session\u201d, the participants were able to find out more about services and submission processes of <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/home\/afr\">Africa Spectrum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanminds.co.za\/\">African Minds<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/langsci-press.org\/\">LangSciPress<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/info.africarxiv.org\/\">AfricArXiv<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div data-wp-interactive=\"core\/file\" class=\"wp-block-file aligncenter\"><object data-wp-bind--hidden=\"!state.hasPdfPreview\" hidden class=\"wp-block-file__embed\" data=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/open-access-berlin\/files\/2022\/11\/Miro_Tips.pdf\" type=\"application\/pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:380px\" aria-label=\"Einbettung von Einbettung von Miro_Tips..\"><\/object><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-5abdddd8-39d1-47ff-95d1-0e392c663212\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.fu-berlin.de\/open-access-berlin\/files\/2022\/11\/Miro_Tips.pdf\">Miro_Tips<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The documentation of this workshop can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/open-access.network\/fortbilden\/thematische-workshops\/online-workshop-am-2-november-2022\">website of open-access.network<\/a>.
