[1] Or sum. (u2)AN.KI NU.TE “It does not reach heaven or earth”?

[2] Although the restoration follows Attia/Buisson (2003), 9 the space within the break does not seem enough for restoring four signs.

[3] The parallel BAM 159 ii 48 has, comparable to UGU 2:73’, 10 GIN2.

[4] The traces at the beginning of the break look like MUNUS or a similar sign. The break has not been noted in Attia/Buisson (2003), 9. The parallel BAM 159 ii 48 has within the position of the break of ms. A the phrase ana DUR2šu2, known from UGU 2:73’.

[5] Attia/Buisson (2003), 10 suggests the reading ni-[…] which is possible. Otherwise, since the entry before mentions minerals these are likewise supposed to be part of the used material medica in this entry.

[6] Restoration according to Attia/Buisson (2003), 10 following the copy of BAM 482. Otherwise, the sign UR/TEŠ2 is not that distinct on the actual tablet.

[7] This approximation follows the margin of the length of a gap of 11 lines suggested in BAM V, 482 iv by Köcher together with the number of lines given following in ms. B. See also Attia/Buisson (2003), 10.

[8] The traces look slightly like the beginning of GU7.

[9] Or read na4IŠKILA as indicated in Attia/Buisson (2003), 10. Otherwise, Borger, MZ, Nr. 608 seems to be uncertain concerning the correct reading of the logogram.

[10] The first sign looks like DIŠ and the traces above might belong to a ruling-line. If this is correct, the whole symptom description of B iv 10’-11’ would surprisingly have to be expected in A iv 29’ which is, due to the bad condition of this passage in ms. A, uncertain.

[11] Most likely referring to Utukkū lemnūtu tbl. 10:1ff. The following GAR is curious and might belong to a following secondary attribution regarding the incantation cited.

[12] Th restoration follows roughly Sakikkû 4:34 (cf. Scurlock, Ghost-Induced Illnesses (2016), no. 118). Since the diagnosis is already stated at the beginning of the entry it is most likely not mentioned again at the end.

[13] Obviously a corrupt reading comparing to ms. A iv 31’ ([U2?].ḪI.A an-⌈nu⌉-[ti …]). Attia/Buisson (2003), 16 gives the alternative interpretation of this passage being part of the materia medica-chain as [na4]AN.BAR which is otherwise curious since all other line beginnings of mss. A and B match the content of each other concerning their location.

[14] In Attia/Buisson (2003), 10 mistakenly transcribed as SAG.KI.MEŠ-šu2 following Köcher’s copy in BAM 482.

[15] Fir restoration cf. the parallel AMT 97/4:6‘ whose therapeutic prescription refers interestingly to the next entry (90’) in UGU 2. The exact wording might likewise follow the parallel Sakikkû 4:19 which notes usually the logographic spellings (e.g. IGI.MEŠ-šu2, NIGIN-du, ZI-bi etc.), excluding the specification ina majjālišu.

[16] The alleged parallel Jastrow rev 28 in Attia/Buisson (2003), 10 is highly uncertain (cf. also the collations in Scurlock (2003), 17 rev 28 which differ from the readings in Attia/Buisson (2003), 10 as well as the unexpected continuation of ms. B).

[17] This might likewise be the beginning of the next entry in ms. B. There seems to be a corruption between both mss. concerning the evaluation of the material as separated content (or not).

[18] See Scurlock, Ghost-Induced Illnesses (2016), no. 88.

[19] Since only ms. A divides the passges by a ruling entries 89‘ and 90‘ might likewise be regarded as on entry.

[20] See again Scurlock, Ghost-Induced Illnesses (2016), no. 88.

[21] Cf. for restoration the parallel AMT 97/4:7’f.

[22] The plural marker on GU2 might suggest the alternative normalization of the logogram as dâdānūšu instead of šerʾānū kišādišu. The respective parallel in Sakikkû 4:16 does not note the plural explicitely.

[23] This form is most likely a corrupt reading of the expected SAG.KI DAB-su-ma. Cf. the parallels for the following entries in Sakikkû 4:11, 13, 12, 9. It is further uncertain, if the same curious form has to be restored in ms. A, here as well as in the following four entries citing diagnostic omens.

[24] Cf. Sakikkû 4:13 which suggests a corrupt reading in B adding the time reference (dUTU.E3) of the following entry Sakikkû 4:14.

[25] The parallel Sakikkû 4:9 continues (DIŠ SAG.KI-šu2 DAB-su-ma KI.MIN SA SAG.KI-šu2 ma-gal ZI.MEŠ) UGU SAG.DU-šu2 DU8 ŠU GIDIM7 GAM.

[26] Curiously, the sign traces do not look like the expected ⌈UGU⌉, ⌈e⌉-[li] or similar but rather like U2, KID etc. Cf. maybe the variant of the apodosis u2-šam-ša2 in Sakikkû 13 (the parallel to UGU 2:92 but without the variant). In general, the space provided in ms. A seems not to be enough for the signs given in the parallel Sakikkû 4:9 (see above).

[27] Another possible reading, which would skip the problem with the odd Sumerian in the second half, is SAG.KI.DAB.BA.KAM2 EN SA.⌈GIG?⌉ x (x). Even if the form after annûtu is not clear, it would describe the contextual scope of the tablet. The last sing traces in ms. A, looking like a Winkelhaken, might hint on the sign ⌈KAM⌉ (SA.GIG.GA.KAM?).

[28] Could this refer to the number of entries, like ⌈2 šu(= abbr. for šu-ši) x (x)⌉ “120 (entries?) for headache and symptoms …”? The position is tempting to read an-nu-tu4bul-e4⌉ x […] and similar as has been done in Attia/Buisson (2003), 11 but it looks rather different from these. The first trace might be DIŠ or MIN, the following sign looks like MA or ŠU. The last one or two sign-traces are squeezed in-between and might belong to sth. like MAN and DI or TE but these readings are far from certain. Assuming that the first one or two signs are likewise squeezed it might be read ⌈bul-u2⌉ with question mark. The middle sign might be read KUR instead of MAN and suggest the reading ⌈lat-ku!⌉ which would be otherwise odd since the adjective should be (following the pronoun at the beginning) be plural. Therefore, the whole passage is far from clear but sincerely not just read bul-ṭe4.

[29] Contra Attia/Buisson (2003), 11 ms. A shows a ruling-line before the catchline of the third tablet.

[30] Cf. also the possible rubric of ms. B in K. 7822+: ⌈DUB⌉ ⌈2.KAM2⌉ ⌈DIŠ⌉ ⌈NA⌉ ⌈UGU?⌉-[šu2 …]. The ascription to this subchapter of the NMS is likewise suggested by the special distribution of the rubric, much comparable to ms. A.

[31] See again K. 7822+ which might belong to ms. B and shows likewise BAK 329.

[1] Mistakenly transcribed as i-kaa in Attia/Buisson (2003), 8.

[2] Scurlock (2005), no. 68 restores I3.UDU ma-ḫir-te [UDU.NITA2 …] “(You rub him with) marrow from the fibula [of a (castrated) ram …]“.

[3] Differing from Köcher’s copy BAM 482 the tablet has MIN inserted after GU7 referring back to the MIN in SAG.KI.

[4] With the determinative NA4 one would expect milʾu “saltpetre” but the following na4AN.ZAH GE6 = kutpû might likewise suggest the interpretation as AN.ZAḪ = anzaḫḫu, a kind of glass. The parallel AMT 97/4:25’ inserts between na4mu-ṣa and na4AN.ZAḪ/NE the additional mineral na4ZALAG2.

[5] Contra Attia/Buisson (2003), 9 (no traces before ina KUŠ indicated) as well as the copy of BAM 482 iii 46’ (just one wedge before ina KUŠ indicated) there are traces of two signs which should, according to the parallels, belong to tara-bak.

[6] The traces copied by Köcher (BAM 482 iii 47‘) as ta-x[…] are not that obvious on the actual tablet.

[7] Left out in all parallels except Jastrow rev 26.

[8] The tablet shows slight traces of appr. 3 signs of which none can be defined with certainty but which, according to the parallels, should be interpreted as SAG.DU-su.

[9] Contra Attia/Buisson (2003), 9 the sign after the damaged area is not SAR but AB (cf. the two horizontal wedges which are equal in length whereas the lower wedge of all other SAR-signs in A are longer than the middle wedge).

[10] The uncertain restoration follows Attia/Buisson (2003), 9.

[11] Cf. Attia/Buisson (2003), 18 which interprets it as a variant writing GIR11/KEŠ2 “to bandage/to bind; tie (etc.)” for LAL = samādu “to bandage; dress up a wound”. Consider the form of the suffixed pronoun –su(-ma) which hints likewise at this interpretation. Cf. also UGU 2:46.

[1] Attia/Buisson (2003), 5 emend the uncertain passage to gišA bi-ni!. Otherwise the position of the determinative GIŠ before the component A of the ingredient bīnu would be quite odd and at least the scribe wrote a clear KAL-sign. This might suggest, next to the emendation of Attia/Buisson, other emendations like <qi2>-lip2 or the uncommon spelling lip2 for līpu/lipû “fat, tallow; marrow, pith”. Cf. also the possible reading lab-bi-ni, see Attia/Buisson (2003), 16.

[2] See also the much more elaborated parallel or variant BAM 9:62f (ina ZI3.KUM ⌈DIDA2⌉ […] / […A?].MEŠ GAZIsar ina KAŠ.MEŠ(corrupt for DIŠ-niš?) ŠEG6šal tara-bak LAL-ma ina-[]). Cf. similar BAM 11:20. These entries seem to have elements of both entries UGU 2:34 and 35.

[3] The parallel BAM 9:40 adds ILLU šimḪAB but replaces the following DIŠ-niš GAZ with GAZIsar which might be a corrupt reading.

[4] Frequent by-form of AL.US2.SA = šiqqu.

[5] Attia/Buisson (2003), 6 reads a-na [nu-u2]-i but the traces after a-na suggest another sign than NU. Despites this, the sign UḪ2 is visible.

[6] For this symptom cf. BAM 174 (always in connection with sufferings of ṣētu-heat). Most of the other attestations are connected to intestinal problems as well as demonic or divine induced afflictions.

[7] It is suggested by U. Steinert that the menopausal woman is the subject of the sentence.

[8] The traces might belong to a sign similar to BI or IŠ/SAḪAR.

[9] See for LAGAB in front of MUNU5/6 the parallel BAM 9:15.

[10] Not noted in Attia/Buisson (2003), 6. The traces (a long vertical wedge whose top is damaged) might likewise belong to a purposeful erasure. Although, it looks in my opinion comparable to the form TI-u used in the surrounding entries.

[11] Attia/Buisson (2003), 6/13 interprets SAR (not EZEN!) here as the unusual spelling GIR11 translating “tu appliques” but one might likewise think of SAR = qatāru “to fumigate”.

[12] For restoration see the parallel BAM 3 iii 32.

[13] BAM 3 and BAM 35 seem to differ concerning the reading of BIL-ti3 or AR3ti3 in connection with saḫlû, cf. UGU 2:54 (with parallels in Attia/Buisson (2003), 7).

[14] For restoration see the parallel BAM 3 iii 20f.

[15] Attia/Buisson (2003), 7 reads DIŠ NA SA SAG.KI ⌈GUB3⌉-[šu2 …] but the actual tablet is broken richt within the sign KI.

[16] For restoration cf. the parallel BAM 3 iii 24.

[17] The reading for this word in the parallel BAM 3 iii 25 in Attia/Buisson (2003), 7 (ki-la2-an) has to be corrected to ki-lal-an.

[18] See Fn. to UGU 2:52.

[19] The restoration follows more or less the parallel BAM 35 iv 1’-2 since it equals the previously used formular of UGU 2 the most whereas BAM 3 shows some deviations (cf. for this line sa-le2-e BIL-ti3 šum4-ma ina KAŠ šum4-ma ina GA UZ3 SAG.DU-su SAR LAL-ma [x (x)]).

[20] This approximation concerning the line numbers follows the reconstruction in Attia/Buisson (2003), 7 restored from the appr. 24 lines missing between ms. A1 (K. 2392+) and A2 (K. 2611) as well as the surplus of 13 lines given in ms. B after the break of A1.

[21] It is uncertain how much lines need to be restored before ms. A2 begins. If the overall structure of the symptom descriptions is still valid, the entry might have been concerned with symptoms of both sides of the patient’s temples as well as both of his eyes.

[22] The parallel in Sakikkû 4:30 has differently DE3qi2.

[23] The parallel BAM 3 iii 10 has differently šur-šum-mi KAŠ but leaves out the KAŠ.SAG of the next line which suggests a possible corruption of the passage in BAM 3.

CRANIUM 2 (BAM 482 and dupl.) col. i

A = BAM 482 (K. 2392 + K. 2574 + K. 3430 + K. 3924 + K. 4091 + K. 10509 + K. 11744 + K. 16407 (+) K. 2611) (for the join with K. 2392 + 16407, which is not included in Attia/Buisson, JMC 1 (2003), see further Attia/Buisson/Geller, JMC 9 (2007), 47f)[1]

B = AMT 19/1 + AMT 20/1 (K. 6066 + Sm 1063) (cf. further the fragment K. 7822 + K. 15826 which might represent the rubric and colophon of ms. B)

[1] Scurlock (2014), 555 reads ḪAB as GIL2, most likely following the similar pattern of the next ingredient u2UKUŠ2.TI.GI.LA.

[2] The parallel BAM 11:1-2 is slightly different: (…) NUMUN u2EME-UR.GI7 NUMUN u2e-di / NUMUN gišKIRI6 NUMUN kišša-ni TEŠ2.BI GAZ SIM (…).

[3] Cf. the parallel BAM 11:4.

[4] Due to the variants EN.DU and IM.DU of this ingredient the proposed reading MIN3.DU (instead of the usual MAN.DU, cf. Scurlock (2014) and elsewhere) in Attia/Buisson (2003) might be preferable.

[5] Cf. for the possible variants BAM 11:5 (TEŠ2.BI) and BAM 9:37 (DIŠ-niš).

[6] This plant is usually written with the determinative U2 but the traces here look more like remnants of GIŠ.

[7] Cf. the parallel BAM 11:7.

[8] The same peculiar writing like in A i 2.

[9] Cf. the parallel BAM 11:5f. The signs of the end of the break in A might belong to the verbal form ⌈tara-bak⌉.

[10] The restoration follows the course of the previous entry 3 (… GAZ SIM ina] ⌈GEŠTIN⌉.SUR.RA tara-bak ZI3 ŠE.SA.A / [ZI3 ZIZ2.AN.NA a-na] ⌈IGI⌉ ⌈ta⌉-šap-paḫ …).

[11] The restoration follows the parallel BAM 11:9 which reads instead of the syllabic ka-man-ti the logographic spelling AB2.DUḪ.

[12] Witness B is comparable to UGU 1 A in as much as it is reluctant to use the ditto-marker DIŠ KI.MIN at the beginning or first column of the text, which is otherwise used frequently by ms. B (UGU 2). Consider the frequent burning holes in B as well which let the whole ms. B look like a prototype (marking the necessary space with the wedge holes) for later copies.

[13] The parallel BAM 11 seems to prefer šimKU7.KU7 instead of šimGUR2.GUR2.

[14] Cf. the noticeable form in the parallel BAM 11:11 (tu-ba-ʾ-a-ru3).

[15] The restoration for this instance in BAM 11:14 after Attia/Buisson (2003), 4 (t[u-ub-bal? …]) is uncertain but not impossible. Otherwise one would expect an expression like ina ṣēti tubbal etc.

[16] Although I can’t find a better reading the traces at the end of the line do not look like ID(A2).

[17] Instead of na4mu-u read in Attia/Buisson (2003), 4.

[18] Just ms. B.

[19] It is conspicuous that entries 15 and 16 are not separated by rulings. Otherwise, given that both entries have more or less the same prescription, they have been considered rather as variants than different prescriptions and therefore haven’t been separated in both mss.

[20] Cf. very similar entry 9 (UGU 2).

[21] Consider the different spellings (like i-nam-zu-zu or ina-zu-zu, TI-qe2 or ŠU.TI), differing symptomatic descriptions (cf. the curious format with pseudo-sumerian spellings within entries 17-23), and slightly varying content (cf. UGU 2 entries 9 and 18-19) which suggest several sources from different traditions and times.

[22] Attia/Buisson (2003), following Köcher in BAM 5 482, continue the second fragment of ms. A with the numbering A i 47’ whose accuracy is doubted here since mss. A and B differ to some degree in number of lines per entry (cf. especially entries 9-11, 25f) which is why the parallel course of lines (which would be 6+ lines following ms. B) in use is possible but uncertain.

[23] It is conspicuous that ms. B left out the ditto-marker DIŠ KI.MIN as well as the ms. has some symptom descriptions written out in toto although it is the same symptomatic issue as in the previous entry (24).

[24] Just ms. B.

[25] For the restoration cf. the parallel BAM 11:34-35.

[26] Attia/Buisson (2003), 5 read [G]I at the end of the line which is quite possible because of the traces in ms. B.

[27] Cinsider forms like šimIM.DI, EN.DI etc. which might also suggest a reading imMIN3.DI or similar.

[28] The reading ⌈DI⌉ in Attia/Buisson (2003), 5 is very uncertain and does not fit the few traces.

[29] The interpretation as medical instrument (cf. CAD) has not been adopted in Attia/Buisson (2003), 5 (ina SI pa-ri).

CRANIUM 2 — links, edition and discussion

CRANIUM 2

Thanks to Eric Schmidtchen for posting the transliterations of BAM 480, the main manuscript for CRANIUM 1.

For CRANIUM 2, Steinert lists the following tablets from Nineveh, in the expected form for a series tablet: (i) BAM 482 = K 2392 + K 2574 + K 3430 + K 3924 + K 4091 + K 10509 + K 11744 + K 16407 (+) K 2611, (ii) AMT 19/1 + AMT 20/1 (reverse and obverse of the same tablet) = K 6066 + Sm 1063 and (iii) K 19766. In addition there are several except tablets from Assur such as BAM 3 = VAT 9029, BAM 9 = VAT 13785 and Jastrow 1913 and a couple tablets from Babylonia: BAM 11 = VAT 10267 and Heeßel and al-Rawi 2003 = IM 132670.

Fortunately, the edition of CRANIUM 2 by Annie Attia and Gilles Buisson is available on the JMC website under the year 2003:

Édition de texte : « Si le crâne d’un homme contient de la chaleur, deuxième tablette».

For an overview of the CRANIUM tablets, have a look at Krisztián Simkó’s slides from the Marburg RAI: A discussion of UGU III.pptx
