BAM 471 (NECK 1 or 2?)

A = BAM 471 (K. 2477 + 2539 + 9150 + 9685 + 10350 + 10461 + 10833 + 13429) (+)

A2 = AMT 33/3b (K. 6828) (+)

A3 = AMT 82/4 (K. 10264)[1]

B = AMT 33/3a (Rm. 119)[2]

– It is unclear whether it is part of NECK 1, 2 or 6 (less likely)

– the ascription of obverse and reverse follows Köcher’s copy in BAM 5 which might likewise be reversed (e.g. the actual fragment is too short to evaluate the reverse which should show a stronger curved surface in comparison to the obverse)

– check similar formulations similar to col. ii in K 12173 and K 9174 (EN2 UDUG? GU2.SA.A, lower part of col. iii)

[1] Identification: E. Schmidtchen. K. 10264 represents most likely the upper part of col. iii ms. A (cf. the edge of the break as well as the ingredient [u2]⌈si-ḫa⌉ visible on both; furthermore, the coll.-tablet BAM 469 bears passages from both fragments subsequently after another. Due to its spacial distribution, the fragment AMT 33/3a (K 6828) might represent the right edge of this passage, and subsequently, the parallel AMT 33/3b (Rm 116) could therefore represent the upper right-hand corner of a second ms. of this tablet.

[2] Identification: E. Schmidtchen.

[3] The approximation follows the usual number of around 65-70 lines per column for this kind of serial tablets attested in Ashurbanipal’s archive.

[4] Cf. the parallel BAM 52:8-9 and the nearly parallel AMT 78, 4 (K. 8685) rev 1-3 (which is announced as a recipe against mišittu).

[5] The recipe’s beginning is much similar to BAM 225 rev 3‘-11‘ (šimGUR2.GUR2 šimLI ILLU LI.DUR NAGA.SI šimBULUḪ ILLU šimBULUḪ šimMUG u2nu-ḫur-ta5 …), noting the same symptom description as NECK 2:1 but a different recipe. Cf. also the parallel AMT 78, 4 (K 8685) rev 4ff (which is announced as a recipe against mišittu) as well as the fragmentary parallel BAM 52:1-4.

[6] Or an error for ina SILA3 KAŠ.SAG ŠEG6šal? The copy of the parallel BAM 225 rev 3‘-11‘ notes rather AN then ina BAR as in BAM 471. See likewise BAM 52:3.

[7] The partly parallel BAM 225 rev 9‘ has maybe erroneously [x] x a-di a-na 3 SILA3 ⌈GUR⌉ […].

[8] The word is usually attested with stones and minerals, formed or worked into the shape of a crescent.

[9] See for restoration the partly parallel BAM 225 rev 10‘-11‘.

[10] Cf. the parallels BAM 52:5-7 (maybe the same symptom description as BAM 225 rev 3‘-11‘ and NECK 2:1),  slightly differently BAM 7, 32 rev 7‘-8‘ and BAM 7, 46 obv 13‘ (both ana MURUB4.MEŠ ašṭāte lubbuki).

[11] Differently interpreted in BabMed Corpus BAM 471 as [… šim]LI (…), which otherwise would not explain the following LU2.

[12] The traces might belong to ID2 and suggest therefore the possible restoration of PIŠ10dID2(kibrītu).

[13] Cf. the partly differing parallels in BAM 52:66-67, BAM 88:17’-20, BAM 168:1-3 as well as the same symptom description in AMT 52/4:2’-7’ (which notes the recipe of entry 9’).

[14] Maybe a variant or an error for the usual spelling MAR.GAL (urbatu or išqippu both a kind of worm) within the parallels.

[15] The partly parallels BAM 88 and BAM 168 add further (…) KAŠ.SAG ŠEG6šal ta-ša2-ḫal SED I3.GIŠ ana IGI ŠUB ana ⌈DUR2⌉-šu2 DUB-ak-ma TI(-uṭ).

[16] The entries are usually separated by a ruling within this document.

[17] Cf. the possible parallel BAM 385 i 1’-2’ and the recipe in AMT 52/4:4’-7’ (but adding u2IGI-lim at the beginning of the materia medica list).

[18] Or syll. u2al-la-an-na although this spelling would be curious but not impossible if considering the loss of the vowel length in favour or a gemination of the last consonant (allannu instead of allānu), which is quite common in nA time.

[19] Cf. the parallels BAM 99:1-14 (partly differing, diagn. qerbēnu GIG, blood from the anus, napšalti NAM.ERIM2.BUR2.RU.DA and ŠU.GIDIM.MA and to loosen burning fever) and BAM 385 i 3’-11’ (ŠU.GIDIM.MA) as well as AMT 52/4:8f (ŠU.GIDIM.MA).

[20] Cf. the partly parallel BAM 385 i 12‘-14‘ as well as the similar ingredients in BAM 216:8’-11’/BAM 482 iii 37’-39’/AMT 97/4:25’-29’ (all referring to the symptom of pain in the temples while being seized by the hand of a ghost). A similar recipe is noted in AMT 97/4:9’ff. (again against the hand of a ghost).

[21] MIN stands most likely again for AN.ZAḪ.

[22] Cf. the parallels BAM 385 i 15’-22’ and Sakikkû 27:32-34 (after the diagnosis, most likely belonging to the beginning of the following entry) and ibid. 35-36 which resembles the symptom description in our entry.

[23] The traces here as well as in BAM 385 do not resemble GIG but might belong to KUM2 or DA which in turn might be connected with UD.DA, attested within the corrupt diagnostic section Sakikkû 27:32-34 (ŠU GIDIM7 UD.DA LU2 GEN7 gišNIG2.GIDRI ša2 dXXX GIR3.MIN-šu2 ⌈ŠU⌉ GIDIM7). Conspicuously, all entries of the diagnostic series concerned with the envoy of Sîn (ḫaṭṭu ša Sîn and ḫaṭṭi mār šipri ša Sîn, maybe bennu and/or Lamaštu?, see Sakikkû 4:56, 15:23’, 19/20:112’a-113’a, 40:43 and 44) refer to fever as well as certain pain in the head and problems with the locomotor system.

[24] The identification of the possible anatomical feature kimzūru (here fem. pl.?) is unclear.

[25] Cf. the parallels BAM 323:65-68 and BAM 385 i 23‘-26‘ as well as for the symptom description Sakikkû 18:3-4. See also W. von Soden, ZA 43, 274.

[26] The parallels have differently ANŠE (BAM 323) and UZ2 (BAM 385).

[27] The partially logographic and partially syllabic spelling is odd and left out in BAM 323 as well as Sakikkû 18:3-4. Another possible interpretation might be it-ta ŠUB-di “it (i.e. the voice or scream) shows a (significant) sign”.

[28] Cf. BAM 323:67 with the syll. spelling iṣ-bat-su.

[29] Cf. the partly parallel for this stone amulet again in BAM 323:69. Restoration suggested by A. Bácskay.

[30] Scurlock (2006), no. 323 reads the likewise possible syll. spelling ia4(NA4)-artu(PA).

[31] See BAM 232:69.

[32] Abbreviated from ina KUŠ tašappī (suggestion A. Bácskay).

[33] The restoration follows Scurlock (2006) no. 223.

[34] Cf. the parallel BAM 232:70-74, BM 40770 and BM 47758.

[35] It is uncertain if these lines might not actually belong to the incantation in A ii l. 32’ff. (cf. the suspicious signs ⌈dim9⌉-me (x)). If not, the fragment might at least be positioned shortly after A ii l. 34’.

[36] Cf. for restoration the possible parallel AMT 93/1:5. Suspiciously, the parallel notes SUḪUŠ u2ḪA/KU6(urânu) na4mu-ṣa AN.BAR na4ZALAG2 ni-kip-ta5 ina KUŠ. It is uncertain whether this recipe represents the same as in B l. 1 or if this is a variation of a common pattern. In short, the restoration of na4mu-ṣa and AN.BAR within the break is uncertain.

[37] The whole passage looks like ⌈GIŠ3.NU.ZU⌉ except that the text actually has SU instead of ZU. The reading ina KUŠ is therefore tentative and the previous passage uncertain.

[38] Restoration uncertain. Cf. the possible parallel BAM 469 obv 37’ which continues the line with the recipe: I3.UDU iš-qip-pi NITA2 u MUNUS SIG2 UGU.DUL.BI [x x x x].

[39] Maybe UGU or GIG? Cf. the possible parallel AMT 96/4:9 (⌈DIŠ⌉ NA GIDIM UGU NA AL.ŠUB) but followed by the recipe of the next entry.

[40] Cf. for the possible ascription of this recipe to the previous symptom description in the parallel AMT 96/4:9’-11’ listing the same recipe with the suggested symptom description of D l. 1’.

[41] Cf. the parallels BAM 469 obv 38’-42’ and BAM 472:4’-7’.

[42] Logogr. gišLUM.ḪA, cf. frgm. C.

[43] Cf. the parallels in BAM 469 obv 43’-46’, BAM 216:51’-54’, BAM 197:32-36 (slightly varying).

[44] For A iii 1’-10’ cf. the parallel sequence of entries in BAM 469 obv 47’-52’, rev 1 (another ŠU.GIDIM-collection on an one col. tablet from Niniveh from an older original). Another parallel is BAM 472:8’-9’.

[45] If AMT 33/3 belongs to this passage, the restoration u2IGI-lim u2IGI-20 seems much likely.

[46] Contra BabMed Corpus BAM 471 iii 4’.

[47] Possible restoration according to BAM 469 obv 52’ suggested by A. Bácskay.

[48] Cf. next to the parallel BAM 469 rev 2 also BAM 221 iii 3’-4’ where the second half of the entry might be restored u2šuk-kuš-ti BAR MUŠ DIŠ-niš ⸢SUD2⸣ [ina DE3].

[49] Cf. the parallel BAM 469 rev 3.

[50] The course of the parallel passage BAM 469 obv 47’-52’, rev 1-7 suggests two ruled of recipe sections.

[51] Cf. the parallel BAM 469 rev 6.

[52] Cf. the parallel BAM 469 rev 7.

[53] Cf. the parallel BAM 221 iii 5’-6’ (DIŠ NA GIDIM.MA GIG 1/2 SILA3.TA.AM3 ⸢KAŠ3⸣ […] / u sa-AḪ-ti TI-qi2 NAG-ma [TI]) as well as possibly the collection Sm 353:3’.

[54] BabMed Corpus BAM 471 iii 12‘ restores sa-⌈ḫir⌉-[ti …] (following CAD) but the sign after sa do rather look like ḪI or AḪ but not EZEN (= ḫir) or ḪAR (= ḫir2). CAD S, 60 sāḫiru A suggests the emendation to sa-ḫir-ti, referring to the urin of male and female encircling persons (i.e. warlock and witch).

[55] Cf. the parallel BAM 221 iii 7’-8’ as well as possibly the collection AMT 95/1 (Sm 353:12’).

[56] Consider the striking similarities with A iii 21 as well as the incipit of NECK 2 (DIŠ NA ŠU.GIDIM.MA DAB-su-ma lu ina DU3ti A.ZU-ti lu ina DU3ti MAŠ.MAŠ-ti il-ta-za-az-ma NU DU8) but without the indication that whether asûtu nor āšipūtu could solve it.

[57] Cf. the parallel BAM 221 rev 9’-10’.

[58] Cf. the parallels BAM 221 rev 11’-13’ as well as for the end of the entry BAM 385 iv 1-3.

[59] BabMed Corpus BAM 221 rev 13‘ transcribes TAG-⌈šu2⌉ but the text as well as the copy has TAG!-⌈su⌉.

[60] Cf. the parallels BAM 221 iii 14‘-18‘, BAM 323 75-78 and BAM 385 iv 4-13 as well as maybe BAM 470 obv 24’-26’.

[61] Most likely the last vowel of the verbal form has been left out. U2 must therefore belong to the plant u2LAL as noted in the parallels (suggestion A. Bácskay).

[62] Both parallels have (giš)MAŠ.ḪUŠ.

[63] Cf. the parallels BAM 323 iii 19‘-24‘, BAM 385 iv 14-19 and AMT 97, 1 (K 2359; K 6015 + K 14166), 1-7. Much similar is BAM 9:55-57 ([DIŠ] ⌈NA⌉ KIN ŠU.GIDIM.MA ZAL.ZAL ša lu2MAŠ.MAŠ NU ZU-u ana ZI-⌈šu2⌉). The incantation is likewise part of Muššuʾu IV/i:94-97.

[64] Or NA4 TU? It is uncertain if identified with aban alādi or ḫuduššu-stone, cf. Schuster-Brandis, Steine, 449f.

[65] Or NA4 KA A.AB.BA(imbuʾ tâmti), cf. the discussion for the problems of the interpretation of this materia medica in Schuster-Brandis, Steine, 421f.

[66] Cf. the parallel BAM 221 iii 25‘-29‘, BAM 385 iv 20-24 and AMT 97, 1 (K 2359; K 6015 + K 14166), 8-13. For the incantation in general see also Sm 385+ (AMT 86, 1) iii 5-9; K 6488 (AMT 85, 1) ii! 14′; „BMS 12+“ (Mayer, OrNS 62, 313ff.) 117; U 2926 (UET 7, 125) Vs. 3-5; VAT 8228 (KAR 298) Rs. 42; K 9873+ (Wiggermann, CM 1, 206f.) [67] Cf. the possible parallels, all respectively following the aforementioned incantation, in BAM 221 iii 30’-31’, BAM 385 iv 25-26 and AMT 97/1:14-15.

[68] BAM 385 iv 25 has var. an-na-a-tu.

[69] The traces might represent alternatively […].⌈MEŠ⌉ <ina>-aḫ.

[70] The same entry might be at hand in BAM 221 iii 23’ (due to the fragmentary state of BAM 385 iv 27 it is uncertain if this has to be considered as the same entry as well).

[71] Cf. the most likely parallel BAM 469 rev 17-19 (ana MIN GE6 ša hal-la ANŠE ša ⸢ZAG⸣ u GUB2 TI-qi2-ma ze-⸢e⸣-[x x x] / ⸢inasig2AKA3 ta-kap-par tug2NIG2.DARA2.ŠU.LAL2 SIG2 KUN UR.GI7 GE6 [x x] / [x x] UR.GI7 U2.HI.A an-nu-ti TEŠ.BI HI.HI ina IZI KUŠ-šu2 DIŠ-niš SAR [(x x) TI]).

[72] The introductory formula might likewise be positioned another line above. It is uncertain if all or maybe more than the recipes given in BAM 469 for this specific ailment (DIŠ NA GIDIM DAB-su) have been noted. Respectively, the numbers following the introductory DIŠ might have differed accordingly.

[73] Cf. the parallel BAM 469 rev 20-21.

[74] The parallel BAM 469 has SAR.A.

[75] Cf. the parallel BAM 469 rev 22-23.

[78] Contra BabMed Corpus BAM 471 iv 8‘ (tu2-kal-la ša) and ibid. BAM 469 rev 24-25 (ka-la-[ma …]). The ambiguous form refers most likely to the curving area of the cranium (kalli gulgulli).

1 Gedanke zu „BAM 471 (NECK 1 or 2?)“

  1. Dear collegue,
here are some small suggestion related to three prescriptions of the tablet.

    ii
    line 13’ A ii 2a’ff:
    ⌈na4⌉[x KU3?] – Based on the parallel (BAM 323 rev. 69) I would like suggest: n[a4Z]Ú? KUG
ina SU – I would like to suggest ina KUŠ as an abbreviated form of ina KUŠ tašappi
In notes to this line (nos.29, 31) there are mistyping (BAM 232 instead BAM 323)!
    iii
    31‘ A iii 5‘
    [KUŠ GU4 : x …] – The embedded variant comes from ist parallel (BAM 469 obv. 52’). I would like to suggest more likely : KUŠ GU4 : K[UŠ? … tašappi?]
    41’ A iii 17’ff:
la i-le-ʾ-⌈u2⌉ [(x)] – None of its paralell texts gives the same form of the finite verb (BAM 221 iii 14’: la i-le-i or BAM 323 rev. 75: la i-le-‘i) and in the broken part of the tablet has place at least one or may be two signs therefore I cannot exclude the possibility that the sign U2 is a determinative of a broken plant. Based on the parallels the suggested plant name should be úLÁL.
