[1] See for other reconstruction for instance Worthington (2005), 13 (ka in[im.ma amēlu? ? gulgullišu?] la ik-ka-lu-ú). The possible restoration with SAG.DU follows Scurlock (2014), 442.

[2] Worthington (2005), 13 reads ta-had-di-iq, a lemma (adāqu “press together (of body parts?)”, aram.) which has been adopted in the CDA, 100, but which is absent from AHw as well as CAD. Even if Scurlock’s reading of the sings as ta-pa-ti4-iq “you shape(?) (it) with a cloth” with the sign value ti4(DI) is unexpected, the verb is at least good attested and would make sense within the surrounding context.

[3] Scurlock (2014), 442 restores ina SAG.KI-šu2 K[EŠDA-ma].

[4] Consider the much more elaborated symptom description of the roughly parallel text BAM 3 ii 7 (DIŠ NA SAG.DU-su A.MEŠ DAB-al MURUB4 SAG.DU-šu2 u SAG.KI.MIN-šu2 TAG.MEŠ-šu2 UGU da-da-ni-šu2 ti-ik-ki-šu2 …).

[5] Scurlock (2014), 442 reads the damaged passage ⌈I3.NUN⌉. However, the actual traces before NUN don’t look like NI (= I3) but might rather suggest the reading EREN proposed in Worthington (2005), 13. The question is if “hot cedar” on the neck and it’s tendons make any sense? Otherwise, hot ghee, as proposed by Scurlock, would intend a kind of rubbing which would have been described as such.

[6] Scurlock (2014), 442 restores LAL instead of ina which is on the base of the traces (a long horizontal wedge at the middle area of the line and some scratches or other remnants underneath it) unlikely.

[7] Restoration following Scurlock (2014), 442 (I inserted a second A in the following kajjānam).

[8] The interpretations of Worthington (2005), 21 and Scurlock (2014), 443 concerning the identity of še-a differ considerably. While Worthington wants to read šēḫu „wind“ e.g. “If a man’s head is ‘windy’ (…)”, Scrulock interprets it as “delirium” most likely resulting from the verb šêu (N) “to agitate” (cf. ša šēḫi “ecstatic”). In lexical context one can find a šīḫu-insect (cf. CAD Š/2, 419 šīḫu C) as well, which might be another option for this word as well as considering the verb šiāḫu “to grow (tall)” and the derived noun šīḫu “tall, high, stately”, here interpreted as “growth; inflation(?)”, which might describe a kind of intergrowth that could have been associated with the accumulation of water (consider the position after a number of symptomatic descriptions occupied with the holding of water on different areas of the head).

[9] Restoration Scurlock (2014), 442. Given to the damaged state of the passage the restoration is highly uncertain. Especially the last sing-traces look rather like TE then UD. The respective word might thus have been an attribute of a not preserved ingredient.

[10] Worthington (2005), 13 restores it-te-ne2-ba-aš-šum-[ma …] but Scurlock (2014), 316 reads differently [NA4 …]. Both authors place the restoration within the broken area but there are actually some traces left before the break which might rather show similarities with Scurlock’s restoration then Worthington’s.

[11] The question is if the last stone is to be expected within the break of A iv 9 (before [… na4]⌈MUŠ?.GIR2⌉) or iv 10 (the small space between na4AN.ZA.⌈GUL?.ME?⌉ and [… na4]⌈AMAŠ⌉.PA.E3).

[12] Against Worthington (2005), 13 (restoring em-[ma ik?ta?]-na-aa) speaks the space within the break which allows barely the restoration of 2-3 signs. The sign IM is not visible. The same problem arises with the restoration of Scurlock (2014), 316 ([… GEŠTU.MIN-šu2 i-ta]-na-az-za) for which is hardly enough space. The form ik-ta-na-aṣ-ṣa instead of ik-ta-na-aṣ-ṣi is unexpected but cf. other forms of the verb like i-kaṣ-ṣa (BAM 385 i 23’-24’, BAM 482 iii 5) which should likewise be considered as sg.-forms. Formally a ventive is possible but gives little sense in combination with the meaning of the verb describing the change of a state (“get cold” etc.).

[13] Cf. for the phrase also Böck (2014), 102 BM 98584+ rev iii 30-31 (suggestion U. Steinert).

[14] The same prescription seems to be given in the fragm. K. 13458:7‘-9‘ (nap-šal-ti SAG.DU ⌈PIŠ10⌉-[…] / ⌈KA⌉ A.AB.BA NUMUN ⌈giš⌉[bi-ni? …] / [TEŠ2].⌈BI⌉ ta-sak3 […]). It is tempting to think of this fragment of another witness of UGU 1 but especially K. 13458:3‘-4‘ (SUḪUŠ giš⌈DIḪ3⌉ […] / NUMUN gišŠINIG […]) differs from the text given in ms. A which indicates that this fragment does not belong to the serial tablet one of CRANIUM but might belong to similar oriented additional  tablets like DT 319 (much similar and partly verbatim following UGU 3).

[15] For the restoration of A iv 16ff cf. the parallel BAM 156 ll. 41-44.

[16] U. Steinert suggests also a form of pašāšu.

[17] Or u2-pimu-unzer for upinzer “caterpillar“? Is this form considered to be a wordplay on muzzerrū “enemies”? Cf. the likewise conspicuous form in BM 103386 obv. 16’ (u2pi-{x}zer!(mu)) in Heeßel, Fs. Geller (2018), 339f.

[18] Readings like SIG7su “its fresh (lit. green) part(s)” might be possible but curious in connection with a upinzer-insect (maybe “caterpillar”).

[19] Cf. for the restoration the parallel BAM 3 ii 43-45 as well as Scurlock (2014), 317.

[20] Restore maybe again te-[ser-rim …] „you incise (respectively three-times on the right and left side)“.

[21] Or SILA11-<aš> ina I3 ŠEŠ2 LAL?

[22] Especially the parallel J(astrow) obv 31-34 seems to be closer to this text then the parallel passage in BAM 3 ii 43-46.

[23] Cf. the parallel J(astrow) obv 34. The other parallel BAM 3 ii 45 reads differently ina LIL2 I3.SUMUN ŠUB.

[24] Scurlock (2014), 317 restores [DIŠ (MIN) šimGUR2.GUR2 šimLI NUMUN u2AB2.DUḪ SUD2 ina I3 SUMUN ḪI.ḪI] SAG.DU-su EŠ.MEŠ without indicating a parallel.

[25] For the restorations cf. J(astrow) obv 35-42.

[26] Contra Worthington (2005), 14 which interprets the traces after TUK in A as ana ⌈TI⌉ but the beginning of MEŠ is clear.

[27] Worthington (2005), 14 emends I3.GIŠ to SUḪUŠ whereas Scurlock (2014), 318 disclaims the emendation.

[28] Worthington (2005), 14 as well as Scurlock (2014), 318 read ⌈ELLAG2⌉ following the parallel J(astrow) obv 43-45. Otherwise the traces look definitely not like BIR(ELLAG2) but show a horizontal wedge at the bottom and two vertical wedges above it, comparable to the beginning of UR or likewise.

[29] Most probably ⌈DIŠ⌉ ⌈KI.MIN⌉ […].

[30] The restoration of ⌈NUMUN!⌉ in Worthington (2005), 15 is hardly fitting the traces.

49 Gedanken zu „BAM 480 preliminary working-transliteration col. iv“

  1. Hello again,
I have just a few suggestions for Col. iv:
Line 1: I would add other options for restoration in a footnote (e.g. Worthington)

Line 8: The meaning “growth; inflation” (šīhu/šēhu) would make good sense.

Line 10: read 8 NA4.MEŠ at the end.

    Line 11: read SAG.KI.MIN-šu2

    Line 12: ending -a in ik-ta-na-aṣ-ṣa = simply ventive?

    Line 13: EREN.SUMUN or EREN.BAD?

Line 14: Shouldn’t it read ša2 MUN NU ŠUB-u? See also for a parallel for this phrase, Böck 2014, 102 BM 98584+ rev. iii 30-31.
Read SUR-ri or SUR-re (cf. also line 24)?

Line 18: One could also expect pašāšu at the end of the line, fitting the restoration napšaltu in line 16.

Line 25: is not really necessary, to anoint “with” can also be expressed with an accusative object. I would thus read SILA11-aš I3 ŠEŠ2 LAL

    Line 31: UD 3.KAM NU DU8 (not KAM2)

    1. Thank you again for your comments!
      l. 31: It is again KAM2 just horizontally arranged in contrast to the often used sloped form (KAM in Assyrian palaeography has a BAD like element at the end of the sign).
