About individual migration decisions of two doctors (to be) in Ghana
The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is the second-largest hospital in Ghana and stands in collaboration with the School of Medical Sciences of the University of Science and Technology. The hospital in Kumasi was converted into a teaching hospital in 1975 and gathers students, postgraduates and doctors from all over the world. With many international workers in the hospital a whole new infrastructure and culture on the campus has developed, where different migration stories meet and amalgamate.
Akay and Johnny are two workers at KATH and are telling us in this interview about their life on the campus, their background and their motivation to work in Kumasi.
This interview gives an insight about the field of labour migration of highly qualified individuals in the medicine sector. We will read about two different perspectives of a young medicine student and a trained surgeon who arrived or returned to Kumasi in Ghana after learning and working in several countries to complete their training. Both express mixed feelings about their journey and working in the campus of Kumasi, but come to the same decision: Kumasi won’t be the last stop for them.
Interview with Johnny: A resident specialist surgeon who lives and works at the hospital campus.
Interview with Akay: A Ghanaian medicine student who is studying in China but is coming back to her home country to do her practical year.
