Praktikums-Bericht: Winter in der Sonne

Ankunft und erste Eindrücke
Ein Teil meines praktischen Jahres, das letzte Jahr meines Medizinstudiums, führte mich nach Montpellier in Südfrankreich. Meine Ankunft Mitte November war bereits ein kleines Abenteuer für sich, denn ich entschied mich für eine Fahrradtour von Lyon nach Montpellier entlang der Rhône. Dies war nicht nur eine wunderbare Möglichkeit, die französische Landschaft hautnah zu erleben, sondern auch eine perfekte Einleitung in mein bevorstehendes Erasmus-Abenteuer. Die Mischung aus Bewegung, Natur und der Vorfreude auf das kommende Semester machte diese Reise zu einem unvergesslichen Erlebnis. Außerdem war es spannend direkt in Kontakt mit Menschen zu kommen (durch das Übernachten bei Personen von warmshowers (couchsurfing für Fahrradfahrende) und zum Beispiel die Meinung der Menschen auf dem Land zur Gesundheitsversorgung in Frankreich zu hören.

Internship at the Orient-Institut Beirut in Cairo, Egypt

From January to February 2025, I had the wonderful opportunity to intern in the „mother of the world“, Egypt. The Orient-Institut Beirut – which derives its name from its geographical location – is part of the German Max-Weber-Stiftung and has a second office in Cairo, Egypt. Due to Israeli strikes on the Lebanese capital from September to November 2024, the institute was forced to close temporarily and was not reopened until January 2025. Of course, the closure prevented me from travelling to Lebanon. Therefore, I was given the choice between a remote internship or an internship in the Cairo liaison office of the OIB. Biochemical Research at Boston Children’s Hospital, USA

When I started my internship at Boston Children’s Hospital, which is affiliated with Harvard Medical School, I had great respect for the institution. Harvard is globally recognized as one of the best universities, and I was eager to understand what exactly makes it stand out. I wanted to discover what contributes to its exceptional reputation and whether its research environment is truly as unique as often portrayed. At the same time, I was curious about how research there would compare to Germany and whether Germany genuinely lags behind in terms of scientific excellence.
