In order to graduate Biology doing an internship outside the FU is mandatory. Due to a lucky coincidence, I found the Moredun Research Institute’s parasitology group.
My decision to go abroad for my internship as well as doing so at MRI was the best one, I could’ve made.
Autor: Erasmus Praktikum
Research Internship at Maastricht University
I began by gaining knowledge of the types of signals to be acquired and analysed in 7T laminar fMRI and knowledge of the most common statistical packages used in data analysis. In the following weeks I practised these skills on an existing dataset provided by Prof. de Martino. I also gained access to educational materials prepared by Dr. Federico de Martino and received one-on-one consultation sessions with the Prof. de Martino as well as scientific exchange within the research group.
Blended Internship in Edinburgh
Erasmus+ blended training format and destination choice
The Erasmus+ traineeship is an useful opportunity to benefit from an international exchange once graduated, as in my case, having concluded my studies on the SS24. Not having been before in Scotland, I chose it as destination because of a seminar delivered by a professor coming from Edinburgh. This seminar was hosted during the period I was conducting my master thesis project at the local research institute Max Delbrück Center.

My experiences at the Centre for European Policy Studies, Brussels
After my Erasmus exchange at the University of Antwerp, I was inspired by my classmates to seek an internship in Brussels, the EU’s headquarters. Although I had always envisioned a career in research, I recently decided to explore opportunities beyond academia, particularly in spaces where research intersects with practical policymaking. That’s when think tanks caught my attention—they offer a unique environment where project-led, evidence-based policy recommendations are developed, bridging the gap between academia and consulting.

Internship in Msida, Malta
When I was finishing my study abroad Erasmus semester in Athens, I knew I wasn’t ready to go back to cold Germany just yet, and I still had to complete the 30 ABV credits, so I decided to look for an internship abroad. I stumbled upon an internship in science communication in Malta, and applied, thinking I would not get in because of my lack of a STEM background. I was impressed with the description, noting that they were working on two projects related to urban planning, which I was planning to study as my Master’s.
