In June 2026, I participated in an Erasmus+ teaching mobility at Pwani University in Kenya, supported by Freie Universität Berlin. This experience focused on Research Methods for graduate students, allowing me to share insights on research design, literature reviews, academic writing, and ethics. The students were highly engaged and brought diverse perspectives, creating a stimulating learning environment. I also engaged with colleagues on postgraduate supervision and curriculum development, gaining valuable insights into the research priorities of East African universities. This experience strengthened my professional networks and appreciation for the region’s academic community. I am thankful to Pwani University and the Erasmus+ team for their support and encourage colleagues to consider these mobility opportunities.

Teaching Mobility at Pwani University, Kenya – A Report by Murtala

Thanks to the Erasmus+ staff mobility programme, I had the wonderful opportunity to teach research methodology to graduate students at Pwani University in Kenya. This experience was both professionally enriching and personally transformative.
Professionally, I gained fresh perspectives on problem-solving and curriculum delivery in a different academic culture. Teaching motivated and resourceful students challenged me to adapt my methods and become a more flexible educator. The mobility also opened doors for future collaboration with colleagues in East Africa and added significant international experience to my academic résumé.
Personally, I was deeply inspired by the warmth, hospitality, and resilience of the local community. Immersing myself in Kenyan culture—from everyday campus life to learning a few Swahili phrases—broadened my worldview in ways that cannot be taught in a classroom.
My advice to colleagues: apply early, book your flight as soon as you receive confirmation, and communicate closely with your host coordinator. The Erasmus+ team at Freie Universität provided excellent support from start to finish.
