Bis zum 31. Oktober 2020 kann über das FU-Campusnetz die Datenbank Oxford Research Encyclopedia of African History getestet werden.
Die Encyclopedia of African History enthält von A wie „Africa in the World: History and Historiography“ bis Z wie „The Zanzibar Revolution and Its Aftermath“ gegenwärtig 299 Artikel zur afrikanischen Geschichte – von den ersten Steinwerkzeuge nutzenden Hominiden bis hin zum Völkermord in Ruanda und dessen Nachwirkungen. Als Herausgeber fungiert Thomas Spear, emeritierter Professor für Afrikanische Geschichte an der University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Mit dem Programm der Oxford Research Encyclopedias (ORE) baut der Wissenschaftsverlag Oxford University Press (OUP) dynamische Online-Enzyklopädien für mehr als 20 Disziplinen auf (ebenfalls von der FU Berlin lizenziert: ORE Religion). Im Gegensatz zu den bereits von der FU lizenzierten Oxford Bibliographies (OBO) wurden die ORE-Produkte bei Einführung entsprechend mit mehr erklärenden Text, Illustrationen und weniger Literaturhinweisen konzipiert.
Die Oxford Research Encyclopedias, als wissenschaftliche Alternative zu Wikipedia betitelt, enthalten von Experten verfasste und geprüfte („peer-reviewed“) Überblicksartikel zu verschiedensten Themengebieten. Die Autoren der jeweiligen Einträge sind benannt, die Artikel entsprechend referenziert und als Literaturliste am Ende der Einträge wiedergegeben. Laut Anbieter werden die Online-Enzyklopädien regelmäßig zum Ende eines Monats durch neue oder überarbeitete Einträge sowie neu erstellte Überblicksartikel ergänzt.
Die einzelnen Artikel können für den Eigengebrauch in Auswahl ausgedruckt und abgespeichert (PDF-Format) werden. Oxford University Press unterstützt den Titel-Export in Literaturverwaltungsprogramme wie u. a. BibTeX, EndNote, RefWorks oder Zotero.

The database ORE African History is a comprehensive, online research encyclopedia that combines high quality, peer-reviewed scholarship about African History with opportunities to deeply engage readers that would not be available in a traditional printed reference work. Currently you can find 299 articles of differenct subjects – from A like „Africa in the World: History and Historiography“ to Z like „The Zanzibar Revolution and Its Aftermath“. Oxford Research Encyclopedia of African History tries to cover the entire range and sweep of African history, from the earliest stone tool–using hominids to the most recent religious movements, or from new interpretations of the Mau Mau movement in Kenya to recent reconsideration of the Rwanda genocide and its aftermath. Editor in Chief is Thomas Spear, Professor of African History Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Beside African History also ORE Religion is temporarily available via the FU Campus Network. In contrast to the also temporarily available Oxford Bibliographies databases (OBO) the Oxford Research Encyclopedias were designed with more explanatory texts, illustrations and fewer references when they were introduced. Each essay is rigorously peer-reviewed, so you can be assured that the information is accurate, unbiased, and up-to-date. Every month, new topics are added and current essays are updated.
